VA Pension:  How Do I Get My DD214 To Show When I Served?When you are thinking about applying for the VA Pension (Aid and Attendance), or having a family member apply, you need to make sure you have your papers showing dates of service and the type of discharge you have.  Here are three reasons you need this:

  1. The VA requires that you submit your papers (DD214) with the application;
  2. You need to verify that the dates of active duty were during a war time period; and
  3. You need to show a “honorable discharge” (or a better than dis-honorable discharge).

But what if you don’t have the form?  Or can’t find it?  Or it is so worn out that you can barely read it?

Then you order a new one from the government.

Two ways to do this:

For VA Pension you are normally wanting and needing the DD214 record — this form allows for more than this but the DD214 is what you need.
